Dive 01: Swains Island

The first Okeanos dive of this expedition is now underway! The dive will range in depths from 877 – 1,200 meters. Scientists will be looking to acquire baseline information on deep-sea habitats, seafloor geology, and biological communities at the Swains Island region of National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. Geological interests include sampling basalt rocks for dating the age of this feature. The ROV should be on bottom for about seven hours.
