Laulima O Ka Moana: Exploring Deep Monument Waters Around Johnston Atoll isUnderway!

The “Laulima O Ka Moana: Exploring Deep Monument Waters Around Johnston Atoll” expedition starts today! NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer left the dock in Honolulu, Hawaii, this morning to make the first – and most important – stop of the expedition: the fuel pier. She will spend most of the day fueling in preparation for the more than 2,000 nautical mile journey ahead. Afterward, the expedition team will depart Pearl Harbor to begin shakedown operations – the ship has recently completed dry dock maintenance and upgrades. Live dives will begin in approximately one week near the Johnston Atoll Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. The expedition will conclude on August 2 in Honolulu, HI.
