Dive 04 Johnston Atoll

NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer has arrived offshore of Johnston Atoll and is preparing to dive. Today’s dive will survey for gold, red, and pink precious corals. While commercially valuable precious corals in the depth range of 350-600 m have never been documented in the Johnston Atoll Unit, this site was chosen because it is an area where these corals could aggregate. This dive is planned to start at 635 meters (~2,085 feet). The dive may be delayed slightly as the ship moves on to station, and should start by about 9:00 AM HST (3:00 PM, EDT).
